What Is the Next Step if my Baby has CF?

What is next if the sweat test was positive and my baby has CF?

First of all, remember that you are not alone. There is a strong and growing network of people with CF, health professionals and care centers to help you and your baby. Thanks to this network — and to aggressive research and new therapies — people with CF are living longer and healthier lives.

As soon as possible, you should contact a Cystic Fibrosis Foundation-accredited care center. The health care professionals at these centers will help you learn more about CF and plan the best ways to keep your baby healthy.

What is a CF care center?

A CF Foundation-accredited care center is a place where CF health care professionals care for people with CF. These centers work not only with individuals but also with other care centers. A national network of care centers works so people with CF receive the best care.

In fact, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has cited the CF care center network as a model of effective and efficient health care delivery. For you and your baby, the health care professionals at your local care center will become your partners in keeping your baby healthy.

You can learn more about CF care centers by watching the “CF Foundation-Accredited Care Centers” webcast.

How do I help my baby stay healthy with CF?

The most important thing is to work closely with the CF health care professionals at your care center. They will help you develop a plan for your baby’s health. You can learn more about staying healthy with CF — including avoiding germs, eating smart, keeping lungs clear and exercising regularly — on the CF Foundation’s website.

What therapies are available for my baby?

Your baby will need to follow a regular treatment routine to stay healthy and maintain optimal lung function. You can read about CF treatments and therapies so your baby will grow and stay healthy.

Thanks to CF Foundation-supported research, people with CF have more therapy options than ever before, including drugs to help clear CF mucus out of the airways, reduce inflammation, fight germs and help your child grow.
