9th Annual Sandia Peak Challenge

What is the Sandia Peak Challenge?
The Sandia Peak challenge is the premier Trail Running and Mountain Biking Race of its kind in New Mexico. Started in 2001, the vision of The Sandia Peak Challenge is to provide an annual mountain challenge that will attract competitive runners and riders state-wide as well as provide an active experience that families of any fitness level can enjoy.
 The event will be held at the Sandia Peak Ski Area on July 11, 2009. For 2009, approximately 400 people are expected to participate in The Sandia Peak Challenge. The Foundation hopes to raise $35,000 through this event.Money raised through

The Sandia Peak Challenge will help fund the only Certified CF Care Center in the state that offers specialized care to patients with CF and support research across the country to ultimately cure cystic fibrosis – giving Keith and many other children and young adults like him the life and future they deserve.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Bikers of the Sandia Peak Challenge!

King/Queen of the Mountain:
8.3 mile mountain bike timed race-estimated start time-7:30 am (Challenging). Be the first to finish this 8.3 mile mountain bike race and be crowned the King/Queen of the Mountain! This event is timed.

Cross Country NMORS Race: 
10:00 am estimated start time. (Challenging) Mountain bike up the King of the Mountain trail and ride down the Golden Eagle trail. Pro/Expert will race two (2) laps-33.2 miles. Beginner Sport Single Speed will race one (1) lap-16.6 miles.
Cross country participants who wish to also participate in “5K Grande” or 2 mile fun run may do so by paying an additional $10.00 fee.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: ALL CROSS COUNTRY RACES PROFESSIONALLY TIMED BY DAVE HALLIBURTON.

7.2 mile run/timed race-Keith Howard Challenge:
 
7:30 am estimated start time. (Challenging) A 7.2 mile uphill run beginning at the base of the Sandia Peak Ski Area (elevation 8,650 ft.) and ascends through rolling hills, switchbacks, and challenging climbs to finish at the top of the ski area (elevation 10,378 ft.) This event is timed. Spectators wishing to be at the finish line of this race may ride the ski lift at a discounted rate.

“5K Grande” race/hike/timed race: 
8:00 am estimated start time. (Moderate) This single track trail winds through fantastic aspen and pine trees and involves a few climbs, switchbacks, and a downhill run to the finish. This event is timed.

2 mile fun run/hike: 
8:00 am estimated start time. (Low Impact) Travel along some uphill grades and rolling hills as you wind through the beautiful Cibola National Forest.

Kids Challenge Race: 
Start time: Immediately following cross country race. Course: Non technical, multi-lap, course at the base of the ski area. Mountain Top Cycling Pro's and Experts will ride along with your youngsters. Age Groups: 5 - 7 yr olds, 8 - 9 yr olds , 10 - 12 yr olds. Prizes: for all our young riders!

 Elevation

Elevation at the base of the Sandia Peak Ski Area where the races begin is 8,650 feet.  Elevation at the top of the mountain where 7.2 mile running race and 8.3 mile King/Queen of the Mountain race ends is 10,378 feet.


Directions to Sandia Peak
Ski Area
 East on I-40, approximately 14 miles from the Big I, exit 175 (Cedar Crest/Tijeras); head north on Highway 14 approximately 6 miles; turn west on Highway 536
(Crest Highway National Scenic Byway).  All race events are located at the Sandia Peak Ski Area.
