Study Phase: Other
Recruitment Status: Trial Completed
Study Drug(s): Not Applicable
Number of Participants Being Recruited: 30
Single / Multi-Center: Single Center
STUDY BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Chronic airway infections in patients with CF lead to progressive loss of lung function effecting quality and length of life. The most common bacteria found in the airway are Staphylococcal aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Hemophilus influenzae, and Burkholderia cepacia.

However, there may be other bacteria that are not identified with the current techniques for processing airway cultures. Little is known about early development of airway infections with multiple bacteria or the importance of other types of bacteria on disease progression in CF. Until recently, studies were limited by culture techniques that may miss multiple or difficult to culture bacteria . New techniques are now being used to characterize bacteria without the need for culture.

This study will use these techniques to identify multiple bacteria and other types of bacteria in airway samples from young CF children.
