Annual VLI Meeting Bolsters "People Pipeline"

In 2003, the growing success of the CF Foundation’s drug discovery pipeline drove the need for an extensive “people pipeline,” a steady stream of new volunteers who could help raise money for vital CF research. To recruit volunteers, the Volunteer Leadership Initiative (VLI) was born. This past spring, 230 VLI members and staff gathered for their annual meeting in Bethesda, Md., where they brainstormed ways to strengthen volunteer development and to expand their events.

National VLI co-chairs, Marc and Margarete Cassalina, joined other volunteer leaders to run workshops about GREAT STRIDES, volunteer recruitment, CureFinders and black-tie events. Wes Moss, a Georgia Chapter volunteer, stressed the significance of placing volunteers on the right committees, where their strengths can best shine. Loren Ankarlo, president of Ankarlo Training Group, spoke to attendees about the “multiplication factor”—multiplying the number of volunteers by “networking their networks” instead of adding one volunteer at a time. In addition, experts offered tips on how to create successful fund-raising campaigns at the Sharing Successes Expo, a new feature at this year’s meeting.

During the VLI awards ceremony, corporations, chapters and volunteers were recognized for their generous support of the Foundation. For demonstrating great courage while battling CF, Joan Finnegan Brooks and Paul Drury received the “Alex Award,” established by Frank Deford, chairman emeritus of the CF Foundation’s Board of Trustees, in memory of his daughter, Alex, who lost her fight with CF at age eight. Drury noted his reason for remaining a passionate volunteer: “It’s always reinvigorating to see new CF parents with kids who are two or three years old, and I tell them that I’m 40. It’s nice to see their eyes light up, to see that there is hope.”
