BB&T: Taking the Search for a Cure to The Bank
If you live on the east coast, chances are there’s a BB&T bank in your community. In cities like Baltimore, Charlotte, and Virginia Beach, BB&T is working to make the fight against cystic fibrosis as popular as its many branches. BB&T has launched community fundraising and awareness campaigns for cystic fibrosis at bank locations up and down the coast that have directly raised nearly $1 million in support to date.

Behind their success is a culture of giving and a spirit of community involvement that is embraced by employees at all levels of the company, as well as its customers.
Maryland - A Tradition of Giving
In the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation - Maryland Chapter, BB&T is a generous sponsor of the Evening on the Severn, an annual fall soiree to benefit the CF Foundation, attended by some of the state’s most devoted contributors to the fight against cystic fibrosis. Since the Evening on the Severn premiered in 2009, BB&T’s contributions to the event have totaled more than $425,000 to support the fight against CF, under the leadership of Brant Standridge, regional group/state president of the Baltimore Metro region, and later, Rick Springer, regional president of the Chesapeake region, who served as event chairs.
When the weather turns warm, BB&T lends its passion and talent for raising funds to the Maryland Chapter’s Spring Swing event, a dinner dance that raised nearly $600,000 last year thanks in part to the heroic efforts of Bill Toomey, senior vice president and area executive, and his wife Courtney.
Year round, the region supports the CF Foundation through branch awareness and fundraising campaigns. BB&T banks feature cystic fibrosis awareness posters and donation piggy banks, specially designed by a local child with CF.
“What amazes me about BB&T is how dedicated and how gracious they are,” said Maren Blum, senior director of development for the CF Foundation - Maryland Chapter. “For all that they give, they are constantly thanking us for getting them involved in our mission to cure CF.”
Virginia Beach - A Driving Force in the Search for a Cure
In Hampton Roads, Virginia, BB&T has been a major force in getting the community involved in the CF cause, and their success is due largely to the outstanding contributions of Regional President of the Hampton Roads region, Bob Boyd. For Bob and his family, the CF cause is very close to home. Bob’s daughter Alex died of cystic fibrosis when she was 15 years old and he is devoted to furthering the search for a cure in her memory.

Under Bob’s leadership, the Hampton Road’s BB&T branches have embraced the CF cause whole-heartedly. Bob has also helped to establish the CF Foundation Virginia Chapter - Hampton Roads Office, and serves as President on the Board of Directors.
BB&T employees have been instrumental in growing the Great Strides effort in the area, with the Chesapeake/Virginia Beach walk far exceeding expectations. “We thought we’d have about 50 BB&T employees attend the walk, and hoped their team would raise about $10,000,” said Development Director of the Virginia Chapter - Hampton Roads Office, Kimberly Johnson. “Instead, they had more than 80 members on their team and raised more than $28,000, including a generous sponsorship from the corporation. BB&T has paved the way for future success with Great Strides and other CF fundraising events in Hampton Roads.”
North Carolina - A Personal Commitment
In North Carolina, BB&T’s involvement in the CF cause began with Deborah Russell, executive assistant to Cameron Wells, who is senior vice president and regional retail banking manager of the Charlotte Metro Region. Deborah lost her daughter to cystic fibrosis in 2000, and the region continues to support the Foundation’s mission to cure CF in her honor.
Each year, the company raises funds to support Great Strides, the CF Foundation’s largest national fundraising event. BB&T employees form teams, write countless letters and host spirited events to raise funds for Great Strides.
Customers are also encouraged to support their Great Strides efforts through fundraising campaigns at local BB&T branches.
In addition to supporting Great Strides walks, BB&T is also a generous sponsor of the North Carolina Chapter’s An Evening with Master Chefs event each year, where guests enjoy cuisine from some of the area’s most renowned chefs.
“BB&T has done a tremendous job of getting the corporate community involved in supporting the Foundation’s mission” says Executive Director of the Carolinas Chapter - Charlotte Office Sabrina Watt. She sums up BB&T’s contributions by adding, “Without BB&T’s efforts to spread awareness and raise funds, much of what we do to help advance the search for a cure would not be possible.”
