Across the country, employees at Walgreens are teaming up to walk in Great Strides and support the search for a cure.
Walgreens has long been committed to the cystic fibrosis community, but a new alliance forged with the CF Foundation has prompted the corporation to expand its commitment to the CF cause.
Late last year, Walgreens took over significant ownership in the parent company of Cystic Fibrosis Services, Inc., a specialty pharmacy that provides medication and treatment support for the CF community. This new association allows Walgreens to better connect with people who have the disease while supporting the search for a cure, and offers people with CF access to high-quality, customer-friendly pharmacy services.
In addition, Walgreens has welcomed the opportunity to support the CF Foundation’s mission and has become a national premier sponsor of Great Strides, the Foundation’s largest annual fundraising event.
“Walgreens has a long-standing relationship with the CF community, and we understand the unique needs and challenges that CF patients and their families face,” said Mike Ellis, vice president of Walgreens specialty pharmacy infusion. “By working with the CF Foundation, we are both committed to CF patients continuing to have access to the medications and services they need to stay healthy and getting the greatest benefit from their relationship with their pharmacist.”
For Brian McCue, a manager at Walgreens in the Chicago area, the new alliance couldn’t have come at a better time. Brian’s son, Luke, now 11, was diagnosed with CF as an infant. Thanks to a new position with the company, Brian is able to help raise awareness about CF in his community through his job.
As a manager, Brian is responsible for overseeing six different stores and helping those stores connect with their local neighborhoods through various events — including Great Strides.
He encourages colleagues to participate in the Greater Illinois Chapter’s Great Strides walk to support the search for a cure. During the last several years, Brian and Luke have helped kick off the event with motivational speeches.
“I’m so thankful that I have the opportunity to combine what I do for my son and the CF Foundation with my job. People in this area are so generous to begin with and being able to connect with the community through Walgreens has been a real pleasure,” Brian said. “The new relationship Walgreens has formed with the CF Foundation is a win-win situation for everyone involved.”
