A little over a year ago, my son Joey met a little boy named Blake Smith. I still remember the day he came home from Kindergarten to tell me, "My new friend Blake has a tube in his tummy and that's how he eats!" I inquired with my wife Patti as to who/what Joey was talking about and was filled in with the details.
Blake Smith has Cystic Fibrosis, and has since he was diagnosed at 18 months.
But CF does not define Blake. What defines Blake is his bravery. His never quit attitude. His happiness. His many gifts. CF just happens to be a battle he fights every single day of his life - and he does so without complaining.
Every time he's sick, Joey cries in worry. Joey's heart is overflowing with love for his best friend, Blake. So, when Blake's mom, Rebecca, asked me to help CF I said without hesitation - ABSOLUTELY.
I assumed this meant I would be barbequing, because that's what I do best. I thought, hey, I can BBQ for CF anytime! But Rebecca had another idea - Running.
I despise running. Anyone that knows me will attest that I would MUCH rather be sitting...and barbequing. Please, don't make me run.
Alas, I'm running.
I'm running for my sweet son, Joey, who wants nothing more than to see his buddy Blake healthy. I'm running for my friend, Rebecca, who hasn't had a full night's sleep in 5 years. I'm running for one of the strongest, happiest, bravest little boys I've ever had the pleasure of knowing - Blake Smith.

Cystic fibrosis is a devastating genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. More than ten million Americans are symptomless carriers of the defective CF gene. Advances continue to be made in finding a cure, but your help is needed now -- more than ever -- to help keep up the momentum of this life-saving research. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those with cystic fibrosis, like Blake. Thank you for supporting the mission of the CF Foundation!
