As many of you know, Carol and I have been involved in fundraising for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for the last seven years, and this year is no different. EXCEPT for the fact that this year I’m stepping a little outside the normal “box” and using an upcoming hiking trip to help raise awareness and hopefully $20,000 for CF.
See that picture over on the right? That’s my buddy Hayden Siler and yours truly. She’s the reason Carol and I got involved with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s OKC Chapter. She has more personality and spunk than most people I know, is a major motivating force behind my trip and will be my spiritual Sherpa while I’m on the trail.
On October 28th I’ll be flying to Nepal and will embark on a 34-mile trek to Everest Base Camp. After making my plans it dawned on me that my adventure and Hayden’s life have a lot in common. CF is an uphill climb for Hayden every single day – breathing treatments, dozens of pills and chest therapy eat up about two hours of her day – every day. The altitude will make it hard for me to breathe on the climb, similar to what Hayden experienced just last month when she came down with pneumonia. The primary purpose of my trip is to capture some inspiring photos of Mount Everest and the Himalayas region of Nepal while soaking a once-in-a-lifetime experience and being grateful for each day, a practice CF families are intentional about as they know that at any point their world could be turned upside down by a life-threatening lung infection.
Assuming adequate supplies of electricity and internet access are available along the way, I’ll be uploading photos to an online gallery and posting updates on my progress during the trek. Those interested in supporting the cause by making a pledge here will be entitled to select any photo (or photos, depending on the size of the pledge) from the gallery, matted and ready for framing. Various sizes and qualities of prints (color glossy to archival museum quality) ranging from 8 x 10” to 24 x 36” or larger will be available. Details on the varying ranges of print options available for specific pledge levels are forthcoming and will be posted here shortly. All of my photos should be processed and uploaded by early December (arriving home Nov. 21) and available for selection and printing. Of course, if you’re not particularly into photography – no problem … your donation will be fully tax deductible! As a little additional incentive, Carol and I will be matching the first $5,000 in pledges.
Thanks in advance for your support of my buddy Hayden Siler and the fight to make CF stand for “Cure Found”.
