Reach Out to Hospital Administration

In some cases, a CF care center may be willing to involve people with CF and families in quality improvement work, but the hospital or institution administration is not supportive. A letter, sent in partnership with your care center, can help bring the importance of quality improvement work—and the need for your involvement—to the forefront. 

The following letter template was created to help you reach out to administration. Of course, personal meetings are the best way to build partnerships with people. Try to sit down with your care center director and the administrator to talk about ways to involve people with CF and their families in making CF care the best it can be.

How can patients and families be sure they’re receiving the best possible care? Researching healthcare quality is easier than ever these days, thanks to national initiatives like the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Hospital Compare and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s public reporting of health outcomes data at all accredited CF care centers (www.cff.org). 

Around the country, people with cystic fibrosis (CF) and their families are exploring efforts to not only measure the quality of care, but also to improve it within their CF care centers. Now, those of us in the CF community at [Name of Hospital CF Clinic] would like to initiate similar work in partnership with our care center and your hospital staff. 

We’ve learned some quality improvement basics from a toolkit provided by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. It’s called, “Action Guide for Accelerating Improvement in Cystic Fibrosis Care,” and you can get a copy by calling 800-FIGHT-CF.

We want to share some of our ideas with you and the care center, and learn more about your own quality improvement perspective. [Name of Hospital] is involved with quality improvement in other healthcare areas. We can gain a great deal from your experience and expertise.
