New Drugs and Better Treatments Lead to Longer Lives for People with CF, Marketwatch.com Story Says

July 26, 2010

There is no cure for cystic fibrosis, but treatment advances are paying off for people with cystic fibrosis, who are living longer and living better, according to a story in Marketwatch.com today.

"The children born now (with CF) will probably live into their 40s or 50s,” says Dr. Jerry Nick, who runs the adult CF care center at National Jewish Health in Denver.

The disease is being fought on two fronts, through improved treatments such as antibiotics and high-calorie diets, and through the development of new drugs.

Four promising CF therapies have advanced to Phase 3 clinical trials, the story says, and each of them treats the underlying cause of the disease. They include VX-770 (Vertex Pharmaceuticals), Ataluren (PTC Therapeutics), Bronchitol (Pharmaxis) and denufosol (Inspire Pharmaceuticals).
