One-of-a-Kind Les Paul Gibson Guitar Auction to Benefit the CF Foundation

Major Gifts Donation Challenge Strikes a Chord with CF Father

September 28, 2009

When Mark Gorman, a father of two daughters who have CF, learned of the CF Foundation’s $6 million major gifts challenge match, he knew the time was right to make a contribution.

Gorman has a very special guitar — a one-of-a-kind Gibson Les Paul Standard Premium Plus featuring patriotic, hand-painted scenes of firefighters on Sept. 11 — currently up for auction on eBay to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

“When I saw the match announcement I thought, ‘Why not use this beautiful piece to help make a difference?’” says Gorman. “Thanks to the match, the donation can go that much further.”

The major gifts challenge match announced this summer is given by two generous families affected by CF that have pledged to match dollar-for-dollar major gifts donations up to $6 million by year-end.

With an asking price of $75,000 — and half of the proceeds to be donated to the CF Foundation — the sale of Gorman’s guitar and subsequent match would be a significant boost to CF research that benefits patients with CF, like Gorman’s daughters, Lizzie (19) and Bailey (17).

“My family has struggled against CF for almost 20 years,” says Gorman. “My daughters understand the value of every day, and I hope potential buyers understand the life-long battle that is cystic fibrosis, knowing that they can help bring it to an end for my girls and all others afflicted by this disease.”

Gorman acquired the guitar — once owned by the legendary Les Paul himself, who recently passed away — through a fundraising event for the Uniformed Firefighters' Association Widows and Children Fund in December 2002.

“It meant a lot to me that Les Paul actually owned this guitar,” says Gorman. “My wife is a retired Navy veteran of 15 years, and it reminds me of the people who give their lives every day for our country. Although this guitar is a tribute to firefighters, it really represents the best traits in all people.”
