American Airlines Celebrity Ski Brings Big Lift to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

March 17, 2009

On March 5, more than 500 guests gathered for the 24th Annual American Airlines Celebrity Ski Weekend at the spectacular Vail Cascade Resort. The occasion? To ski, meet celebrity guests and, most important, to raise money for a great cause: finding a cure for cystic fibrosis.

American Airlines Provides Warm Welcome

Celebrities were everywhere at the Vail Cascade Resort. More than 500 guests turned out to ski and have a great time and, most important, to raise money for a cure for CF.

In his warm welcome to the weekend’s program, Kurt Stache, vice president and general sales manager of American Airlines said, “Through the years, we have raised more than $27 million to assist the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation…And although we have inched closer to finding a cure, we haven’t reached the finish line.”

He added, “Many of my American Airlines colleagues—employees and retired employees—are here on their own to donate their time and share their talents to make your weekend special. They personify one of our company’s greatest attributes: bringing people together…for fun…for good causes…and for cures.

Celebrity Guests

Guests had the opportunity to meet actors such as Gordon Clapp from NYPD Blue and Wendie Malick from Just Shoot Me, as well as other celebrities such as astronaut Buzz Aldrin and baseball great Fred Lynn. Television’s The Bachelor host Chris Harrison was on hand to offer guests the inside scoop on Bachelor Jason and his change of heart about Melissa. In addition to skiing, guests shopped at Vail Village, and, after dinner on Thursday night, were entertained by the rock band “The Fray.”

One of the weekend’s highlights was an uplifting presentation by three young women with CF, sisters Sam and Libby Pelican and Piper Beatty. A mainstay at Celebrity Ski, this lovely trio has inspired guests and given them hope for the future for those living with CF for the past 21 years.

Our Outstanding Corporate Partner

“I can’t say enough good things about our Outstanding Corporate Partner American Airlines,” said C. Richard Mattingly, executive vice president and chief operating officer of the CF Foundation. “Their loyalty and generosity as presenting sponsors of this great event for 24 years is unparalleled and speaks volumes about the company and the wonderful people who are American Airlines. The Foundation is so fortunate to have them as our partner and our friends.”
