CF Foundation Rolls out New Vehicle for CF Awareness

May 6, 2009

Determined to expand awareness about CF across as many miles as it can, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has hit the road literally with its message. Partnering with Road Scholar Transport, a motor-freight company based in Scranton, Pa., the Foundation rolled out the CF Awareness Truck as part of the Road Scholar 10 Million Mile Hope and Awareness Campaign that began in March at its annual Volunteer Leadership Conference.

This bright red 18-wheeler features the CF Foundation’s logo, a “65 Roses” theme and a photo of 11-year-old Sean Squires. It will be travelling the Mid-Atlantic to raise money for cystic fibrosis research.

CF Foundation for each mile the truck travels until it reaches 10 million miles!

Details That Made a Difference

How did the Foundation get truckin’? Bill Squires has a son with CF and is a volunteer with the Greater New Jersey Chapter. While Squires was enjoying an afternoon at the State Fair with friend and fellow CF Foundation fundraiser, Al Dorso, Dorso introduced him to James C. Barrett, founder and president of Road Scholar Transport.

At the fair, Barrett was exhibiting his latest "awareness truck" for his company's Hope and Awareness Campaign, which aims to spread awareness about select illnesses with displays featured on the sides of Road Scholar Transport trucks that travel the country.

After meeting Squires, Barrett was enthusiastic about helping the CF Foundation and resolved to dedicate the next (and sixth) truck to raising awarenss for CF.  The idea, says Barrett, “was to bring attention to the many afflictions that touch the lives of so many people. We have the opportunity to impact thousands of people each day when our trucks drive down the road.”  Since the program began, Road Scholar has featured trucks dedicated to breast cancer, prostate cancer and autism, among other diseases.

“This spring, we’re proud to roll out our cystic fibrosis truck and raise awareness of CF and the CF Foundation,” notes Barrett.

On the Road with Sean

The bright red 18-wheeler features the CF Foundation’s logo, a “65 Roses” theme and a photo of the smiling face of Squire’s 11-year-old son, Sean.

As this truck travels through the Mid-Atlantic States, more than 100 million people are exptected to see it.  Road Scholar will donate a penny to the CF Foundation for each mile the truck drives until it reaches 10 million miles, which could result in $100,000 for CF research!

“Raising funds and awareness for CF is always at the forefront of my mind. So, when I saw such a terrific opportunity, there was no choice but to pursue it,” says Squires.  “The CF Road Scholar truck gives us incredible exposure, and its fabulous design makes it impossible not to notice.  I think we have something great here,” he says.
