From October 18 through 22, more than 100 avid golfers played on the exclusive greens at Kiawah Island, S.C., while staying at The Sanctuary for the 12th annual Ultimate Golf Experience, and helped to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Beginning on Thursday, new participants joined a core of returning golfers at Turtle Point to compete for a chance to win the coveted "Gio Award," named in memory of Giovanni Villani, a young man with CF who passed away at age 14. Giovanni inspired many to support the Foundation and, in particular, the UGE in its formative years. Later that evening, guests were treated to old fashion southern hospitality with a traditional oyster roast at Mingo Point.

Golfers teed off at Osprey Golf Course on Friday, continuing their weekend-long quest to win the Gio Award. Following an incredible day of golf, UGE participants had a chance to bid on one-of-a-kind items including a walk-on role on the Emmy-winning television show My Name is Earl and exclusive travel packages to Four Seasons resorts around the world. Lewis Black, the award-winning comedian, television and movie star and, and long-time Foundation friend, had guests rolling with laughter throughout his stand-up routine.

were neck-in-neck during the championship round.
Huether took home the coveted "Gio Award."

Saturday’s golf was on the world famous Ocean Course, one of the most challenging and picturesque courses in America. During dinner, the much-anticipated Gio Award was presented to Mike Huether, who beat out the top 16 players during the championship play-off to win the award. The evening concluded with musical entertainment by Steve Hornbeck.

With the help of Outstanding Corporate Sponsor American Airlines®; Hospitality Sponsor, Altus Pharmaceuticals; Reception Sponsor, ICS Corporation; and Beverage Cart Sponsor, Phelps Trucking; and the generosity of all the guests, the 2006 Ultimate Golf Experience was an astounding success.

C. Richard Mattingly, the Foundation's executive vice president and COO said, “Ultimate Golf is an extraordinary event, held at an extraordinary venue, but its most important components, by far, are the remarkable people that participate. Much beyond this one weekend, our guests become friends that care deeply about the success of the CF Foundation and the lives we represent.”
