Beth Sufian, Lawyer, Wins Alex Award

April 4, 2007

Alex Award -- Beth Sufian
Frank Deford hands Beth Sufian the "Alex Award," a special picture painted by Paul Drury, last year's recipient of the award.
“Balancing the roles of mother, wife and attorney can be difficult for any woman,” said Beth Sufian, 41. “When you add a chronic disease to these responsibilities, there is not much time for anything else.”

With great poise, Sufian has found the right balance in her life. She is the mother of 6-year-old Isabella and is passionate about her work as a legal advocate for people living with cystic fibrosis. At her law firm, Sufian & Passamano, she and her husband Jim Passamano are dedicated to helping people with CF and others secure Social Security benefits and better health insurance coverage of CF care.  For the past eight years, she has also run the CF Legal Hotline, serving more than 8,000 people to date. In 1996, TIME Magazine recognized her distinguished work and named her one of its “Local Heroes.”

TIME Magazine isn’t the only one recognizing Sufian as a hero in the CF community. For demonstrating great courage while battling CF, the Foundation recently awarded Sufian its highly coveted “Alex Award,” established by Frank Deford, chairman emeritus of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, in memory of his daughter Alex, who lost her fight with CF at age eight.

Accepting the award, Sufian recounted the first time she had read Deford’s book, “Alex: The Life of a Child.” She recalled the strength she drew from Alex’s bravery. “Alex gave me inspiration to continue fighting CF,” she said. “To receive this award is quite a special honor.”
