Prominent California Gala Raises $550,000
May 8, 2007
In 1983, a Foundation volunteer, who had recently moved to Orange County, Calif., had an idea: to create a prominent event that would attract some of the most important community leaders to the CF cause. In its first year, about 150 guests attended the Southern California Chapter’s gala. With each coming year, the fund-raiser evolved into one of the region’s must-attend social events. On April 28, 24 years after its inception, the Guild Gala drew 500 guests and raised a tremendous $550,000.

As guests walked into the exclusive Newport Beach Marriott Hotel, they were greeted by a chic cocktail reception and silent auction. As they browsed the unique auction items, a buzz of excitement filled the air. Up for grabs was a Danube River Cruise with business class airline tickets; a luxurious eight-day vacation to Greece; and sought-after football tickets to see the University of Southern California Trojans battle Notre Dame’s fighting Irish. There was something for everyone.
In the breathtaking ballroom—set up for an elegant night of dinner and dancing—large glass chandeliers draped from the ceilings, illuminating the room in a soft light. Emcee Shawn Parr, the famous voice of many award shows like the “Golden Globes,” was the voice for the evening’s main events. During the Bid for a Cure, Parr spoke about how important it was for guests to support CF research. The crowd responded, donating $175,000.
Another highlight of the evening was the “Breath of Life” award, given to Carol, Megan and Dr. Myron Kanofsky. Carol and Myron had lost their daughter Sarah to CF 10 years ago, but continued to support the Guild Gala and other Foundation efforts to find a cure. “Why wouldn’t we continue to be involved doing everything we can to help others with CF? Look at all you did for Sarah,” said Dr. Kanofsky.
The Guild Gala was an astounding success thanks to the leadership of Chair Sue Hook; volunteers Gayle Demsher, Char Goetz, Debbie Hambright, Dean Gerrie, Karen Hall, Danni Good and Gail Isen; and corporate sponsors American Airlines®, BJ’s Restaurants, Jerry and Cheri Hennessy, Pat Hitchcock O’Connell, Dave and Sue Hook, and Gordy and Marcia Kanofsky.
