Dr. Bonnie Ramsey Honored for Work in CF Research

May 16, 2007

Bonnie Ramsey
On Tuesday, May 15, the Northwest Association for Biomedical Research honored Dr. Bonnie Ramsey for her tremendous contributions in cystic fibrosis research and care. Her research at the University of Washington, Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle over the past two decades has had a direct impact on the length and quality of life for people living with CF.

In a recent interview with the Business Journal Biotech supplement, Dr. Ramsey stated that more than 25 years ago, she recognized that she wanted to commit her life to prolonging the lives of her CF patients and to helping to find a cure. She declared that she wanted to make a “difference.” Since that time, she has never wavered in the pursuit of that goal.

With the help of her colleagues, she helped create one of the finest CF care centers in the country. In the process, she was instrumental in the development of Pulmozyme® and TOBI®—two drugs that are now part of most patient’s treatment regimen.

In 1998, with Dr. Ramsey at the helm, the Foundation created its Therapeutics Development Program, along with a network of care centers to conduct the clinical trials that would accelerate the pace of CF research. Today, almost 40 clinical trials have been completed and nearly 30 drugs are in the Foundation’s drug discovery and development pipeline.

“Dr. Bonnie Ramsey has had one of the most remarkable careers in the field of cystic fibrosis research and care,” said Robert J. Beall, Ph.D., president and CEO of the CF Foundation. “I know that with her on our side, we will find a cure for cystic fibrosis.”
