Experts Discuss Nutrition During Web Cast

June 15, 2007

On June 12, more than 950 worldwide tuned in as experts took on the hot topic of nutrition and CF during the most recent Web cast aired from Buffalo, N.Y.

“Using Nutrition to Stay Healthy with CF” discussed the latest progress in CF research and nutrition guidelines in the field, and provided tips on how to incorporate high-calorie foods into busy lifestyles. In addition to nutritional advice, experts addressed CF-related diabetes, G-tubes and appetite.

A flurry of questions—some submitted during registration and others from live viewers—created a dynamic question and answer segment. The audience learned about new enzymes, vitamins and supplements that have recently become available on the market.

“Nutrition is a vital piece of the CF puzzle,” said Dr. Drucy Borowitz, director of the Children’s Lung and Cystic Fibrosis Center in Buffalo. “It’s one aspect of the disease that we can control, and has such big implications for overall health, especially if children are given enough calories and can put on weight from an early age.”

Christine Coburn-Miller, the center’s dietitian, shared with viewers the “Calorie Contest,” a fun way to teach children how to judge calories and fat in foods (and for parents to sneak extra calories into almost every bite). During the contest, children guess the number of calories and fat in given food items, and the one with the closest answer wins a prize. Miller also suggested ways to ease mealtime struggles so that tension and eating don’t have to be synonymous in a household dealing with CF.

Dr. Joseph Cronin, the adult program director, had tips specifically for adults, and presented an interview with a busy adult who is successfully managing a full-time job, motherhood and her diet.

The Web cast was the 13th in a successful series of virtual patient education programs, coordinated and hosted by the CF Foundation and supported through an unrestricted educational grant from Genentech, Inc. These innovative programs have created a growing virtual CF community, who are engaged in patient care and eager to ask questions of the CF experts.

To help the Foundation as it continues to enhance its public outreach, viewers are asked to fill out an online survey after each Web cast (live or archived). “Using Nutrition to Stay Healthy with CF” will soon be available on the Foundation’s Web site. To view other Web casts, click here.
