Foundation Supporters Take on Sandia Mountain

August 31, 2007

At 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 28, hundreds of bikers gathered at the starting line. With the warmth of the sun beating on their backs, they began fiercely pedaling for more than 8 miles, all uphill, hoping to be crowned “King or Queen of the Mountain” during the New Mexico Chapter’s 7th annual Sandia Peak Challenge, Presented by Defined Fitness.

Sandia Peak Challenge
Bikers begin the more than 8-mile trek up Sandia Mountain.
Held at Sandia Mountain in Albuquerque, N.M., the event attracted nearly 300 of the most competitive athletes in the state to strenuous bike rides, trail races and hikes to raise money for the CF Foundation.

While the bikers challenged the mountain, runners took to the trails, located along the ski slopes. All were tested by the elevation, which rose from sea level to more than 2,000 feet at the mountaintop. For the families and friends interested in enjoying the beautiful sights at a more leisurely pace, paths were open for hiking and walking.

After an active day of biking and running, participants and spectators sat down for a picnic, where competitors received their prizes, sponsored by premier outdoor gear store REI. Guests also had the chance to win two American Airlines® tickets during a raffle to raise money for CF research.

Under the leadership of Damian Calvert and Dr. Kevin Atchley, event co-chairs, the Sandia Peak Challenge raised more than $25,000. Special thanks go to corporate sponsors Defined Fitness, REI, Sandia Peak Ski, Bank of the West, Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Mexico, Bank of Albuquerque, 93.3 KOB FM, 7Up, Alphagraphics, Copyrite and Screen Images.
