CF Supporters Stay Right on Target for CF
September 20, 2007
It was like a scene from an old Western. Hay bales were scattered across the field. Dust rose from the hooves of horses. Cue the music as a group of people—adorned in cowboy hats and boots—whisk in to save the town.
Eight-year-old Jacob Sellhorst, who has CF, and Event Chair Dan Beutler present Hilary and Tom Watson with a special token of their appreciation: a collage of photos signed by local people living with CF.
In this particular movie, the heroes weren’t saving a town, but their mission was even more important: to raise money to help find a cure for cystic fibrosis.
On Friday, August 24, 60 “heroes” arrived at the Heart of America Chapter’s Cabela’s Shoot for a Cure presented by Generali USA with Hilary and Tom Watson to participate in the popular sporting clay tournament. Held at the Saddle and Sirloin Club Shooting Sports Facility in Kansas City, Mo., participants engaged in an afternoon of competitive shooting, followed by the Wild Game Reception, complete with cocktails and appetizers under a large outdoor tent.
The action continued into Saturday when participants returned for another day of spirited clay shooting. Five hundred guests, including professional golfer Tom Watson, Kansas City Chief’s fullback Boomer Grigsby and defensive end Jared Allen, joined the scene during an evening reception. All enjoyed good ole fashioned Texas-style cooking catered by local restaurant Wil Jenny’s.
For many, the highlight of the evening was the dynamic live auction. Hands flew in the air for a chance to win a pheasant-hunting trip that will be filmed for the Outdoor Channel. The incredible trip—generously donated by title sponsor Cabela’s—sold for $4,000. Another popular auction item was a Ryder Cup Captain’s cloth poster, autographed by all the currently living Ryder Cup Captains, which sold for $5,500.
Directed by Dan Beutler, the tournament’s event chair, Cabela’s Shoot for a Cure was a box-office hit, raising $115,000 in one weekend. Special thanks go to Beutler, Deb Grimes, Dave Ruf III, Mike Kennedy, Q104 Radio Station, and Kevin Timmons and Doug Watkins of Wil Jenny’s, as well as corporate sponsors Cabela’s, Generali USA and Wil Jenny’s.
