Golfers Go Gangbusters for CF

The golfing doesn’t get any better than the courses at Pinehurst, N.C. From October 18th through the 20th, enthusiastic golfers trod the fairways in the footsteps of golfing legends Jack Nicklaus and Payne Stewart for the 13th annual Ultimate Golf Experience, helping to raise nearly $500,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Thursday through Saturday, participants competed for a chance to win the prized “Gio Award,” named in memory of Giovanni Villani, a young man with CF who passed away at age 14. Giovanni inspired many to support the Foundation and, in particular, the UGE in its early years. This year, golfer Shawn Michael took home the coveted prize.

After three wonderful days on the links, golfers were ready to relax and appreciate some top-notch entertainment. Thursday night, guests enjoyed a performance by world-renowned country singer Tracy Lawrence. And, Friday evening was capped by a side-splitting stand-up performance by Lewis Black, award-winning comedian, television and movie star and long-time Foundation friend. Not only did Black light up the stage that night, but as a loyal returning participant to the Ultimate Golf Experience, his good humor, generosity and devotion to the CF cause continued to be key elements of the event’s success.

Both nights, auctions added to the excitement thanks to auctioneer Robin Treadway, with the special assistance of 7-year-old Wells Clark, who has CF. The bidding was fierce for exclusive Four Seasons Resort stays arranged by John Brubaker, as well as for the personal services of six renowned Pinehurst caddies who have carried the bags of many golfing greats.

With the help of Outstanding Corporate Partner American Airlines, Hospitality Sponsor Altus Pharmaceuticals, Reception Sponsor ICS and Beverage Cart Sponsor Phelps Trucking, and the generosity of all the guests, the 2007 Ultimate Golf Experience was a resounding success.
