Raleigh Makes a Run for CF

November 15, 2007

Some high-schoolers write papers for their senior projects. Sami Joe Snider helped raise $12,000.

Raleigh Run for CF
Sami Joe Snider and Cindy Cole share a
reflective moment.
With the help of her school, church, and local community , the high school senior organized the First Annual Run/Walk for CF in memory of her friend and former classmate, Lauren Cole, who lost her battle with CF at age 19 in 2006. The money raised benefited the Carolinas-Raleigh Chapter

Sami Joe wanted her CureFinders project to honor Lauren’s memory and to raise funds for research to find a cure for CF. Before long, she had drummed up publicity, printed brochures, signed up participants, and organized a day-long event on October 20th in Thomasville North Carolina. The day’s activities included a run/walk race, live music, door prizes, hotdog and bake sales, and a space walk for the kids.

In addition to the fees for participating in the 5K, funds were raised by encouraging businesses to sign on as bronze, silver or gold level sponsors. The event raised $12,000 toward finding a cure for CF and the 150 people who participated in the day’s events were reminded of a special young woman who lived her life with courage and dignity.

“Lauren battled this disease daily with grace and a smile,” said Cindy Cole, Lauren’s mother. “Today we recognize her courage—the courage it takes for all those who struggle with CF.”

At the end of the race, the CF Foundation presented Sami Joe with a special “Make a Difference” plaque to honor her for a job well done. Special thanks go to sponsors Providence Weslyan Church Youth, PBM Graphics, and Leather Miracles. Thanks also to volunteers Kay Myers, Lisa Snider, and Cindy Cole.
