Teeing Off Along the Bayou for Cystic Fibrosis
July 3, 2008
This June, the Louisiana Chapter – New Orleans Office brought Cajun spice and old New Orleans charm to its 37th annual Bobby Hebert Golf Classic, when some 250 supporters of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation gathered for a night of cocktails and local cuisine and a day of enthusiastic golf. By the time the last putt was sunk, more than $130,000 had been raised toward finding a cure for CF.

On the eve of the tournament, guests savored seafood creole, andouille-stuffed puff pastry and other regional favorites while enjoying a view of the mighty Mississippi. A silent auction, featuring sports memorabilia and stylish his and her Tag Heuer watches generously donated by Adler’s Jewelers, inspired a fierce bidding battle on behalf of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
A highlight of the evening was event chair and longtime volunteer Jim Harp’s presentation of the new Stephen Teagle Memorial Award to former New Orleans Saints quarterback and Honorary Classic Chairman Bobby Hebert. As he presented the award, Harp marked his 25 years of service on the chapter’s Board by paying tribute to his young friend Stephen, who died of CF at age 30 in 1996. “In all of the 15 years that I knew Stephen, I never once remember him complaining,” said Harp. “While small in stature, he had within his frail body the heart of a champion—full of strength, fight and determination.”
The next day, a little rain could not dampen the spirits of the 188 golfers gathered at Stonebridge Country Club for the annual golf tournament. Foursomes, including many CF families, teed off at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and received tips on their technique from volunteer PGA pros, including Greg Core and Fred Frederickson. Meantime, onlookers and players enjoyed food from local eateries, including Mr. B’s, Galatoire’s, Acme Oyster House, Hilton Riverside, Corky’s Barbecue, Drago’s, Serrano’s and Ruth’s Chris Steak House.
Thanks go out to corporate sponsors Hilton Hotels, Brain Harris Autoplex and Hornbeck Off Shore Services, as well as to event committee volunteers Jay Maumus and Robert Brown for their unflagging energy and enthusiasm.
