Taking the Plunge for Cystic Fibrosis in Rockaway Beach
Two hundred swimmers braved the cold in February to "plunge" into the ocean at Rockaway Beach for the Greater New York Chapter-Westchester Office's Take the Plunge for Cystic Fibrosis.

You could hear the whoops and shrieks from miles away. At the Greater New York Chapter – Westchester Office’s 9th annual Take the Plunge for Cystic Fibrosis, 250 intrepid people plunged into the Atlantic Ocean on a chilly day in February and raised quite a ruckus—not to mention a whopping $130,000 to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s fight for a cure.
Details That Made a Difference
Along with the 250 fearless—if freezing—swimmers, guests and onlookers gathered afterwards for some much-appreciated hot chocolate, food, a raffle and silent auction.
“Every year it gets bigger and better,” said Event Co-chair John McMahon. “What started out as a ‘goof’ has turned into a major fundraiser.” According to John, the Plunge was great fun—“but we all realized we were there for a serious reason, so that kids like my daughter Annie can grow up and lead a happy and healthy life.”
That message came through loud and clear in ten-year-old Annie’s moving speech. “A friend asked me the other day, ‘If there was one thing you really wanted in this world, what would it be,’” said Annie. “I thought for a second and found myself uttering the words ‘A cure for CF—that’s what I want.’” She added, “Not exactly a typical preteen wish, but a wish most precious to me.”
