Volunteers Turn a Great Strides Effort into a CureFinders Miracle

November 20, 2009

Clemson University student Meg Bendik began her online Great Strides campaign in honor of her nephew Gavin who lives in Charlotte, NC.  Little did she know, the mother of one of her contacts, Jackie Weaver, was the student advisor at Eastside High School in Taylors, South Carolina -- a connection, which turned into a multi-state fundraising effort for the North Carolina -- Charlotte and South Carolina Chapters of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Students from Eastside High School present a check to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at halftime of their homecoming football game. The students raised $138,220 for CF research and care.

Each year, Eastside High School and long-standing rival Wade Hampton High School wage a friendly, but fierce competition during Spirit Week to see who can raise the most funds for their chosen charity.

Once Weaver learned of Bendik’s efforts to raise funds for the CF Foundation, Eastside High named the Foundation as the recipient charity for spirit week and joined the CF Foundation’s fundraising program, CureFinders.

To raise funds, the ambitious and creative Eastside students organized a 5K run, golf tournaments, fundraisers at local restaurants, movie nights and also solicited direct donations from the entire community.

Although Wade Hampton beat Eastside High by a nose, Eastside students raised an incredible $138,220 for the CF Foundation.

Many thanks
