North Carolina Begins Screening Newborns for CF

April 15, 2009

North Carolina has joined 46 other states and the District of Columbia in screening all newborns for cystic fibrosis at birth. After hearing from CF Advocatesvolunteers across the country who speak out on behalf of those with CFthe North Carolina legislature voted to require newborn screening last year. Routine screening of all newborns for the disease began on April 13th.

Babies that are screened are more likely to be diagnosed earlier, meaning that they can start treatment sooner. Early treatment for babies with CF can lead to better health, fewer hospitalizations and longer lives. The CF Foundation is committed to ensuring that all states screen newborns for CF.
