Voices of CF Community Help CF Services Pharmacy Continue Operations in NY

September 16, 2009

People with cystic fibrosis in New York will be able to continue to get their medications from the Cystic Fibrosis Services Pharmacy, now that New York Gov. David Paterson has signed a bill allowing the pharmacy to continue to operate in the state.

Under the state’s new Specialty Pharmacy Program, CF Services would have been ineligible to provide medication and care to people in New York with CF.

Assemblymen Richard Gottfried (D-Manhattan) and Robin Schimminger (D-Tonawanda) alongside Sen. George Maziarz (R-Niagara) shepherded a bill through the state legislature to allow CF Services to be exempt from the new pharmacy program.

After hearing from CF Foundation advocates, chapters and care centers, the Governor signed the bill into law on Monday night.

“I signed this bill because I believe that the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation network, which provides medicine and other services to individuals with cystic fibrosis, are succeeding in giving exceptional care while keeping costs down,” said Governor Paterson.

Cystic Fibrosis Services provides pharmacy services to CF patients, regardless of patient income, insurance status or ability to pay. It also provides continuity of care for people with the disease, helping them to stay healthier longer by avoiding medical complications and more costly care.
