Surf Stars Offer Ocean of Support for CF Foundation

August 10, 2010

When surf celebrities Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama learned the sport they loved led to a new cystic fibrosis therapy—hypertonic saline—the duo teamed up to wipe out the disease.

Three years later, nearly 600 guests joined Hamilton and Kalama for the 3rd annual Pipeline to a Cure gala in Huntington Beach, Calif., which raised $450,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Seaside Celebration

Hosted by the Southern California Chapter - Orange County Office, the gala and auction honored Tim Salmon, former Los Angeles Angels baseball player for his support of the CF Foundation and was the weekend highlight in Huntington Beach, complete with celebrity sightings and gourmet cuisine.

Surf champion and guitarist Tom Curren and Emily’s Army, a four-piece rock band of teen boys, provided musical entertainment. The band is named after Emily Daskas, who has CF and is a cousin of bandmates and brothers Cole and Max Becker.

Competitive bidders made some waves of their own during the live auction, raising the stakes for popular items including a vacation to Punta Mita Villa for 10 guests, an American Airlines European getaway, an all-access experience with the band Green Day in New York, and three unique adventures with surf legends Laird Hamilton, Dave Kalama and Rob Machado.

Remembering Heroes

This year’s event was dedicated in memory of Emily Haager, a young woman who lived courageously with CF until she was 27 and who was the CF Ambassador for Pipeline to a Cure for its first two years.

Emily passed away earlier this year. In a moving Bid for a Cure speech, Stacy Motenko remembered her best friend and their shared dream. “Emily and I planned to celebrate a cure for CF on the beaches of Fiji,” said Stacy, 24, who has CF. “When a cure is found, I will be on the beach with Emily close in my heart.”
