Cyclists and committee members Dave Tarnow and Mark Fry pedaled for a cure at the Eurand CF Cycle for Life.
Cyclists and committee members Dave Tarnow and Mark Fry pedaled for a cure at the Eurand CF Cycle for Life. Dave, who has CF, uses this quote to fuel his goal of finding a cure for CF: “I ride because I can. I ride because others can’t. I ride because others need a voice. I ride in hope that someday others can ride with me. I ride because someday, I may need someone to ride for me.”

This September, more than 60 volunteers donned their helmets, shades and other cycling gear to pedal for the CF cause in the Louisiana Chapter – Baton Rouge Regional Office’s first Eurand CF Cycle for Life race.

Held on the beautiful estate grounds of Hemingbough, the race led cyclists through the rolling hills of St. Francisville and raised $53,000 for the CF Foundation.

Reasons for Riding

One volunteer was key in jumpstarting the new event.

For many years, Dave Tarnow, who has CF, organized the Dave’s Cycle for a Cure fundraiser, which switched gears to become this year’s Cycle for Life.

Inspired by his good friend Jennifer Board, who lost her fight with the disease in 2003, Dave gave the Louisiana Chapter the push it needed to

make the first-year event a huge success.

In a letter to his friends and family, Dave encouraged others to join him on the ride:

“It is sometimes a struggle for me to muster up the motivation to get out and ride. With 60 percent lung function, it is never an easy undertaking, but I must push onward. I am blessed to have two good legs that allow me to ride, so I am going to use them.

"After all, I know others who are far less fortunate than myself, so if I’m going to ride for any reason, I am going to ride for those who cannot.”
