First Day of North American CF Conference Features Science Presentations and Moving Accounts by Families Touched by CF

October 23, 2010

Nearly 4,000 scientists, physicians, and other professional caregivers from around the world gathered in Baltimore on October 21 to present the latest results from cystic fibrosis research studies and exchange ideas about ways to improve the lives of those with CF.

The first day of the conference also featured emotional and moving presentations by families whose lives have been touched by CF and young people battling the disease.

Nicole Faulk, whose 7-year-old daughter Capri has CF, spoke about her family’s decision to move across the country to take part in a clinical trial of VX-770, a drug aimed at treating the basic CF defect.

Faulk also addressed the urgent need to continue developing drugs that will advance the cure for cystic fibrosis, and her appreciation to all those who are working toward that cure.

Danny Bessette, a 26-year old with CF, spoke in a video message about the milestones he has been able to achieve — including his recent marriage — thanks to the advances in treatments and care.

Also featured was 28-year-old CF activist and musician, Emily Schaller, who welcomed guests to the conference with a humorous and uplifting video message

Finally, Dr. Eric Sorscher, M.D., from the University of Alabama, provided an overview of the basic defect in CF and the multiple ways CF researchers are addressing the problem. (Check back soon to view Dr. Sorscher’s presentation, along with other plenary presentations, available next week on this website.)

A key theme of the day was the hope and optimism about the many new treatments now available to treat CF — but also the deep need to develop even more therapies that will better manage the symptoms — and address the core defect.
