Since the Milestones to a Cure campaign kicked off five years ago, nearly 1,300 contributors have stepped up to support the largest major giving campaign in the history of the CF Foundation.

At this year’s North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference (NACFC), many of these volunteers gathered at a celebratory luncheon to recognize their critical role in helping the CF Foundation raise $175 million by the end of the year to keep pace with rapidly increasing opportunities in CF science and research.

“This lunch was a moving celebration of what passionate people can accomplish when they come together for a common purpose,” said Milestones volunteer Amy Barry, who is also the Foundation’s National Advocacy co-chair, and the mother of Jamie, 15, who has CF. “It was tremendously inspiring to be with so many people who are integral to reaching the Milestones goal — and then hear firsthand about the scientific progress being made as a direct result of our efforts.”

Thanking Volunteers for Their Significant Contributions

More than 150 major contributors to the Milestones to a Cure campaign gathered at the 2010 North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference this October to celebrate the campaign’s success and learn more about the therapies and advancements made possible through their support.

Luncheon attendees were welcomed by Baltimore native Colleen Clary Perzan, who thanked the crowd for their support and shared her story of living with cystic fibrosis and achieving her dreams.

“My wedding day was such an important milestone for my family and me. I always knew on a warm summer evening, surrounded by the people I love, that I would proudly carry sixty-five red roses down the aisle,” Colleen said.

“I am excited for my future and for what’s to come. I will continue to thrive because of what you have done.”

Celebrating Tremendous Leadership

C. Richard Mattingly, executive vice president and chief operating officer of the CF Foundation, thanked the attendees for their generosity and leadership. “We are thrilled to be able to celebrate the progress in CF research and care made possible by you and the other major donors who could not attend in person, but are here in spirit today.”

Mattingly and the attendees honored Milestones campaign chair Joe O’Donnell for his tireless leadership of the ambitious initiative, as well as his announcement that he will continue as chair of a new phase of the campaign — a $75 million extension known as Milestones II.

“We relied on Joe to lead this initiative, and he willingly accepted the challenge,” Mattingly said. “There is no one better suited, or more capable to lead us through the next phase of the campaign. We are indebted to Joe in so many ways.”

O’Donnell also expressed his gratitude to the volunteers for their outstanding support. “I cannot thank all of you enough,” O’Donnell said. “You have given so generously to bring the CF Foundation closer to achieving more medical milestones — and more personal milestones for those living with cystic fibrosis.”

After the luncheon, attendees were invited to attend an NACFC plenary session to see firsthand what their efforts had made possible.
