Academy Award-winning director James Cameron and accomplished actress Suzy Amis Cameron are known for taking on ambitious, successful ventures in their professional lives.

The couple are also passionate participants in the fight against cystic fibrosis, a disease that affects their nephew, Bo.

This past November, James and Suzy, who is an Oklahoma native, joined 500 friends of the CF Foundation as honorary chairs of the Oklahoma City Sooner Chapter’s Breath of Life Gala to help raise $210,000 to support critical research and medical programs.

“As a father of two children with cystic fibrosis, and someone who has been involved in many Foundation events, I have overwhelming gratitude for the Camerons,” said Mark Harvey, M.D., CF Foundation Oklahoma City Leadership Board President. “I am grateful to each and every person who participated and helped make the event a success.”

A Night to Remember

Held at Oklahoma City’s National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, the gala included one-of-a-kind entertainment and live and silent auctions.

Special guests included Alyssa Siler, CF mom and the reigning Mrs. Oklahoma, and Angie Mock, news anchor for Fox 25 who emceed the night.

Attendees were also touched by a special video produced by volunteers Adam Beatty and Royce Sharp, highlighting the personal stories and daily lives of three heroic people living with CF.

The Night’s Honorees

The David Kenworthy Kerr Award recognizes someone living triumphantly with CF and reaching out to help others with the disease. This year’s recipient is Jackie Dubois Miller, 27, who lettered all four years as a Division 1 cross country and track athlete and served as the team’s captain for the University of Oklahoma. In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Jackie excels in her many demanding jobs as meteorologist, wife and mother, and a passionate volunteer for the CF Foundation.

The Breath of Life Award recognizes exceptional volunteers for their significant contributions to the CF Foundation’s efforts to cure and control cystic fibrosis. Jeannette and Dick Sias received the honor this year for their steadfast support of the Sooner Chapter since the Oklahoma City office opened in 2003.

In addition, Teresa Rose of Chesapeake Energy, Inc., the night’s Corporate Honoree, was presented an original piece of art entitled

Bid for a Cure

To bring the night to a close, Bo Russell, 24, who has CF and is the nephew of James and Suzy Amis Cameron, shared his story with the crowd in his Bid for a Cure speech.

“I wish my future and my life were not dependent upon someone else’s generosity, but they are,” Bo said.

“I wish the drugs being developed that could change my future could be created for free, but they cannot. I am thankful for everyone who has made a contribution to support the lives and futures of everyone who has CF.”
