CF Foundation Volunteers Tee Off for a Cure at Ultimate Golf Experience
November 14, 2011
At the 17th annual Ultimate Golf Experience held this October, more than 100 golfers headed out on North Carolina’s beautiful and historic Pinehurst Resort for a memorable weekend of good golf for a great cause.
Comedian and longtime CF Foundation friend Lewis Black hosted this year’s Ultimate Golf Experience and entertained guests with fellow comedian Kathleen Madigan at a Friday night performance.
Whether they were par for the course — or spent significant time in the rough and sand — all golfers and their families who attended the event felt good knowing they were making significant swings toward a cure for CF.
Fun and Fundraising, Both On and Off the Course
The CF Foundation’s premier golf tournament, the 2011 Ultimate Golf Experience spanned five days and raised more than $546,000.
“We are extremely grateful for the generosity of all the golfers and other volunteers who joined us this year,” says C. Richard Mattingly, Foundation executive vice president and chief operating officer. “They are our cherished partners in the fight against CF, and their contributions are critical to helping us reach our ultimate goal of a cure and control for the disease.”
After hitting the impeccably manicured links each day, more than 150 guests enjoyed gourmet meals and nightly entertainment, featuring longtime Foundation volunteer and honorary trustee Lewis Black, who has contributed his trademark sense of humor and generosity to the event for 16 years. This year, Black was joined by a colorful entourage of entertainment professionals, childhood buddies and golf enthusiasts, all of whom shared in the excitement and showed their support for the CF cause. Fellow comedian Kathleen Madigan brought some hearty laughs both on and off the course, joining Black for a Friday night performance.
Guests were also treated to a musical performance by Grammy Award-winning songwriter Victoria Shaw, who wrote "One Heart at a Time" to benefit the CF Foundation in 1998.

Bid for a Cure
Foundation volunteer and special guest Mitch Greenberg, 38, who has CF, shared his inspirational story with the crowd on Friday. In his Bid for a Cure speech, the husband and father of 8-year-old twins spoke about how new treatment options and research breakthroughs are allowing him to focus on the future, rather than just survival.
“People with CF want to live for tomorrow, not for today,” said Mitch, who underwent his second double lung transplant last year. “With your contributions here tonight, I truly believe in the near future CF will stand for ‘Cure Found.’ And when that day does occur, everyone affected by this disease will finally take that deep breath of relief and be able to think about how they will enjoy their tomorrows.”
Victoria Shaw, Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter and supporter of the CF Foundation, entertained guests with a performance on Thursday night.
Inspired by Mitch’s remarks, guests showed their support and enthusiastically continued the bidding on exciting auction items, raising a total of more than $390,000. Favorite items included fabulous themed trips, such as “Hollywood” and “Broadway,” contributed by Lewis Black and friends, with accommodations and airfare provided by Four Seasons and American Airlines.
Honors and Awards
The Ultimate Golf Experience was also an opportunity to celebrate the volunteers who helped make the event a success. The winner of the tournament, John Cox, received this year’s Gio Award, named in honor of golf enthusiast Giovanni Villani, who lived a courageous life with CF until the age of 14.
In addition, golfer Chad Moore took home the Sheri Mount Champion for a Cure Award, named in memory of the late event co-chair, for her passionate commitment to the fight against CF.
