New Cystic Fibrosis Drug Brings Gift of a Future, NPR Reports Online

May 6, 2011

In her entire 41 years, Roe Van Epps had never been able to shovel snow because of the crippling effect of cystic fibrosis. Then came the experimental CF drug VX-770 and one day this winter following a blizzard, she cleared her entire driveway.

Her inspiring story, and the scientific road traveled by the CF Foundation and Vertex Pharmaceuticals to develop VX-770, is featured in a National Public Radio story today, in a blog called CommonHealth.

NPR chronicles the Foundation’s successful approach to drug development. “The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, founded in 1955, is held up by many as a model disease-fighting group that bridges between researchers, doctors, patients and donors in perpetual quest for a cure,” the story says, continuing: “Without the Foundation, everyone seems to agree, there would be no VX-770.”
