CF Foundation Announces Pharmacy Alliance with Walgreens

October 2, 2012

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation announced today the creation of an alliance with Walgreens, giving the drugstore chain a significant ownership stake in Cystic Fibrosis Services Inc., the Foundation’s specialty pharmacy. CF Services will continue to operate under its current name and remain in the same location in Bethesda, Md.

The CF Foundation entered the alliance with Walgreens to provide the CF community with greater access to affordable medications and expanded pharmacy services. It will also enable the Foundation to expand its patient assistance and advocacy programs.

CF Foundation Announces Pharmacy Alliance with Walgreens

The CF Foundation and Walgreens, the nation's largest drugstore chain, enter an alliance to operate CF Services Pharmacy.

The CF Foundation will remain a partial owner of CF Services and will collaborate with Walgreens to ensure that CF Services continues to be the pharmacy of choice for the CF community.

“We are proud to have been the trusted pharmacy service provider for thousands of people with CF over the past several decades,” said Robert J. Beall, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. “With Walgreens, the CF Foundation will have the opportunity to serve our community even better. It’s a win-win for people with CF and their families.”

Walgreens is the largest drugstore chain in the country and has more than 7,900 stores nationwide, including 180 hospital outpatient pharmacies, offering greater convenience and enhanced services to CF Services customers.

In addition, Walgreens has a national network of pharmacy professionals experienced in helping patients manage complex and chronic health conditions such as cystic fibrosis. With Walgreens, CF Services will be able to offer a number of unique programs that can help CF patients better manage their treatment regimen and improve overall health.

Walgreens also has a strong track record of helping customers obtain insurance coverage and reimbursement for specialty medications, as well as financial assistance from a wide range of programs.

“This alliance brings together the CF Foundation and Walgreens — two organizations that are the best at what they do,” said Mike Ellis, vice president of Walgreens specialty pharmacy and infusion. “Walgreens is proud to partner with the CF Foundation, an organization known for its strong commitment to serving people with CF and their families, and looks forward to working together to serve this community at an even higher level.”

Walgreens and CF Services will work together to ensure a seamless transition for customers. CF Services members will continue to use the same toll-free number to order medications and interact with the same knowledgeable and caring professionals. Customer-friendly services, such as free shipping and monthly invoices for out-of-pocket payments, will continue. In the longer term, CF Services expects to provide many new services and benefits to customers and their families.

The Walgreens alliance also will allow the CF Foundation to strengthen its patient assistance programs through the launch of a new Patient Assistance Resource Center called PARC. This service will help patients and families access the treatment and care they need.
