Bid for a Cure Helps Net $271,000 for CF Foundation at Master Chefs Event
April 10, 2013
When Suzie Hunt lost her husband to CF in 2009, her world was turned upside down. She lost her best friend, her partner, and the father of her son. But the one thing Suzie didn’t lose was the determination to help find a cure.
Oliver Pleune, 4, has CF and must undergo hours of therapies and takes 30 pills every day just to maintain his health. He recently donated one of his original paintings to the Carolinas Chapter – Charlotte Office’s An Evening with Master Chefs event, where it was sold during the evening’s live auction.
Suzie shared her story with almost 250 guests at the Carolinas Chapter – Charlotte Office’s 16th Annual An Evening With The Master Chefs event when she gave the Bid for a Cure speech.
“I am simply Suzie,” she said. “I am learning to adjust to life as a single mom while staying strong in my faith and raising my son to be a model citizen. In other words, I’m living out my vocation.”
Her passionate words brought in three $10,000 Bid for a Cure donations and helped the Charlotte Office net $271,000 for CF research and care.
A Special Night
In addition to Suzie’s powerful speech, guests were treated to a seven-course meal and fine wine prepared by some of the top chef’s of the Southern United States. The event was held at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte.
The highlight of the evening’s spectacular live auction was the auctioning of an original piece of art by Oliver Pleune, 4, who has CF. The piece, titled “Wish Upon a Star,” was sold for $4,000.
“I’ve attended all 16 galas and this evening was really a special night,” said Chris Heck, President of Duke Energy and Carolina Chapter’s Board member. “The focus on the food is incredible. It’s a meal and an experience you aren’t going to get anywhere else.”
