Team of Xtreme Hikers Raises $430,000 in Search for a Cure

May 23, 2013

Carolinas Xtreme Hike

A team of 71 hikers trained for three weeks and collectively raised $430,000 to help support CF research at the Carolinas Chapter – Charlotte Office’s 5th annual Xtreme Hike to Cure Cystic Fibrosis.

A team of 71 hikers in North Carolina climbed to new heights at the Carolinas Chapter – Charlotte Office’s 5th annual Xtreme Hike to Cure Cystic Fibrosis, held April 20. Together, the hikers raised more than $430,000 to help support CF research and drug development.

Novice and experienced hikers alike trained for three months before spending as many as 15 hours climbing over rugged terrain on the Appalachian Trail. Upon completing the 30-mile trek, participants were greeted at the finish line by volunteers and families affected by CF.

John Barlow, event co-founder and winner of the 2013 Jena Award, said the event drew many new friends to the CF cause and offered hikers a chance to reflect on the importance of the Foundation’s mission.

“People come away from the hike knowing they pushed themselves physically and mentally for a really great cause. It’s a humbling experience,” Barlow said.

Each hiker set a fundraising goal of at least $3,000 for the CF Foundation, but many hikers far exceeded their initial targets, raising $10,000, $20,000 and even $100,000.

“At the end of the day, finishing the hike is a great accomplishment. But raising money to keep the search for a cure going is what this is all about,” Barlow said. “Thanks to the hard work and dedication of both novice and experienced hikers, the Xtreme Hike program continues to grow and break records.”
