FAQs about Walgreens and CF Services Alliance

In December 2012, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation established an alliance with Walgreens, the nation’s largest drugstore chain. The alliance gives Walgreens a significant ownership stake in Cystic Fibrosis Services Inc., formerly the Foundation’s specialty pharmacy.

The Foundation continues to be a partial owner of CF Services, which operates under the same name and remains in Bethesda, Md.

The CF Foundation entered the alliance with Walgreens to provide the CF community with greater access to affordable medications and expanded pharmacy services, and to enable the Foundation to expand its patient assistance programs. Below are frequently asked questions and answers about this alliance and what it means for the CF community.

How does the alliance between Walgreens and Cystic Fibrosis Services work?

Walgreens has a significant ownership stake in Cystic Fibrosis Services Inc. (CF Services) and manages the day-to-day operations of the pharmacy. The CF Foundation will remain a partial owner of CF Services and, together with Walgreens, will work to ensure that CF Services continues to be the pharmacy of choice for the CF community.

Why did the CF Foundation decide to sell a significant ownership stake in CF Services?

This alliance was the next logical step in the evolution of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and CF Services’ ongoing commitment to provide the best pharmacy services to customers and their families. The CF Foundation conducted a long and thoughtful exploration of how CF Services could continue to operate in the changing and increasingly complex health care environment. CF Services recognized it couldn’t continue to provide the same level of access, convenience and affordability on its own. By forming an alliance with an organization of Walgreens’ size and stature, CF Services will be able to offer patients greater access to affordable medications and expanded pharmacy services.

Why did the CF Foundation select Walgreens for this alliance?

The CF Foundation evaluated its options very carefully and thoughtfully, and it is confident that Walgreens is the right partner for CF Services’ customers. Walgreens will provide continuity of services and a customer-focused experience. CFS customers and their families can benefit from Walgreens broad experience and leadership in the specialty pharmacy industry. Walgreens provides services for many conditions, including cystic fibrosis. And, as the alliance evolves, Walgreens plans to develop and add new offering to customers.

Will CF Services customers have to do anything different as a result of the alliance?

No. CF Services customers will continue to use their pharmacy services in the same way that they have in the past and can expect to receive the same level of quality and service.

  • CF Services will retain its name and brand, and the pharmacy will continue to be based in Bethesda, Md.
  • Customers will continue to use the same toll-free number they have always used to order medications or ask questions.
  • The same knowledgeable and caring professionals at CF Services will handle orders and answer questions.
  • Patients will have the same patient-friendly services, including free shipping and monthly invoices for out-of-pocket payments.

Will CF Services still provide the same services to CF patients?

Yes. CF Services will continue to offer the same quality service to patients and families. In the longer term, CFS expects to expand and improve service to customers as a result of the alliance. CF Services will be better able to provide the CF community with enhanced access to affordable medicines and enhanced pharmacy services.

Will the CF Foundation’s commitment to CF patients be lessened by this alliance?

No. The Foundation made this move to ensure that people with CF and their families have even greater access to affordable medications, as well as enhanced services and support programs. The alliance with Walgreens also allows the CF Foundation to expand its patient access programs, including the Cystic Fibrosis Patient Assistance Center and the Cystic Fibrosis Patient Assistance Foundation (CFPAF), both of which can be reached by calling 1-800-541-4959 or by visiting www.cff.org/LivingWithCF/AssistanceResources.

The CF Foundation’s mission remains the same: to find a cure for CF and to improve the lives of those living with the disease.
