In December 2012, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation established an alliance with Walgreens, the nation’s largest drugstore chain. The alliance gives Walgreens a significant ownership stake in Cystic Fibrosis Services Inc., formerly the Foundation’s specialty pharmacy.
The Foundation continues to be a partial owner of CF Services, which operates under the same name and remains in Bethesda, Md.
The CF Foundation entered the alliance with Walgreens to provide the CF community with greater access to affordable medications and expanded pharmacy services, and to enable the Foundation to expand its patient assistance programs. Below are frequently asked questions and answers about this alliance and what it means for the CF community.
Walgreens has a significant ownership stake in Cystic Fibrosis Services Inc. (CF Services) and manages the day-to-day operations of the pharmacy. This alliance was the next logical step in the evolution of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and CF Services’ ongoing commitment to provide the best pharmacy services to customers and their families. The CF Foundation conducted a long and thoughtful exploration of how CF Services could continue to operate in the changing and increasingly complex health care environment. CF Services recognized it couldn’t continue to provide the same level of access, convenience and affordability on its own. The CF Foundation evaluated its options very carefully and thoughtfully, and it is confident that Walgreens is the right partner for CF Services’ customers. Will CF Services still provide the same services to CF patients?
Yes. CF Services will continue to offer the same quality service to patients and families. In the longer term, CFS expects to expand and improve service to customers as a result of the alliance. CF Services will be better able to provide the CF community with enhanced access to affordable medicines and enhanced pharmacy services.
No. The Foundation made this move to ensure that people with CF and their families have even greater access to affordable medications, as well as enhanced services and support programs.
