The Social Security Administration (SSA) has published updated eligibility requirements for disability benefits for people with respiratory diseases, including people with cystic fibrosis. The
new requirements will take effect on October 7, 2016.
The eligibility criteria were expanded and updated to better reflect the needs of people with CF. The requirements took into consideration updated FEV1 criteria, a wider range of CF complications and expanded eligibility for those who receive lung transplants. In addition, the eligibility rules allow for treatments for exacerbations wherever deemed most appropriate.
On September 22, the CF Foundation hosted a series of webinars on SSA disability benefits for clinicians and people with CF and their families. The webinars featured representatives from the SSA and covered the disability application process, the new criteria and how they will be implemented, and questions from the community.
The archived clinician webinar will be shared on the listserv. Visit the CF Foundation Compass booth at NACFC for more information. Compass may also be able to provide assistance to people with CF through the application process. Contact Compass at 844-COMPASS (844-266-7277) or
