Two Physicians Awarded for Outstanding Contributions to CF Care

This year's North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference brought together nearly 4,000 cystic fibrosis researchers, physicians, caregivers and other medical professionals to share the latest in CF research and care.

During the conference's first plenary, Preston W. Campbell, III, M.D., executive vice president for medical affairs at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, presented two CF physicians with the Richard C. Talamo Distinguished Clinical Achievement Award, one of the highest honors given by the Foundation.

A professor of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins and later chairman of pediatrics at Tufts University School of Medicine, Richard C. Talamo, M.D., became deeply committed to the mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and served in many capacities, including on the Foundation's medical advisory committee and board of trustees. He helped raise interest in cystic fibrosis and encouraged qualified researchers to focus on the disease.

Created in his memory, the Talamo Award recognizes individuals who have spent their careers caring for people with CF and whose contributions have significantly impacted the course of the disease.

“We would not be where we are today without the commitment of many devoted and talented people who helped pave the way for our current success,” said Dr. Campbell. “This year's honorees have made tremendous progress in improving the quality of life for people with CF, and are the epitome of professional excellence and compassionate care.”

The 2013 Talamo Award recipients are:

  • Wayne Morgan, M.D., professor of pediatrics and physiology, CF center director and chief of pediatric pulmonary medicine at the University of Arizona. Dr. Morgan has been a long-standing member of the Foundation's Clinical Research Committee and has chaired the Foundation's Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) since it was formed in 1999. Under his leadership, the DSMB has become an internationally recognized model for helping ensure patient safety in clinical trials.
  • Drucy Borowitz, M.D., professor of clinical pediatrics, CF center director and chief of the pulmonology division at the Women's and Children's Hospital of Buffalo. Dr. Borowitz served on the Foundation's Care Center Committee for 11 years, chairing it for five years. More recently, she has helped lead the CF infant nutrition study BONUS and is spearheading an effort that will bring more gastroenterologists to the field of CF.

“I can't imagine what the field of cystic fibrosis would be like without the many contributions of these two physicians,” added Dr. Campbell. “As I think about the future, I know that even greater things are to come as we work together toward our shared goal of ending this disease.”
