Although the late Garry Shandling is best known for his work as stand-up comedian, actor, writer, director and producer -- what many remember beyond his raw talent is the benevolent and generous way in which he lived his life. Shandling has left a significant gift in his will to the CF Foundation in honor of his late brother, Barry, who died of cystic fibrosis when Garry was just 10.

The loss was profound, as Garry had witnessed from a young age his parents tirelessly caring for Barry at a time when little could be done to help those with CF. Garry had a strong bond with his brother, inspiring him to give back after Barry died. Shandling used his fame to raise awareness about CF, supporting the CF Foundation's work by volunteering and hosting many events.

“We are grateful to receive this legacy gift and kind recognition from Garry and his loved ones,” said Preston W. Campbell, III, M.D., president and chief executive officer. “It embodies Garry's spirit of generosity while honoring his brother Barry. This support means that the Foundation can accelerate progress through innovative research, increase access to expert care for people with CF and continue to make a difference in the lives of those we serve.”

The CF Foundation is investing heavily in the science that directly supports the mission -- and philanthropic gifts like Shandling's help further fuel these efforts. The Foundation is making tremendous progress in pursuing its bold research agenda to tackle CF from all angles. Drugs that treat the underlying genetic cause of the disease are becoming available to more individuals and promising treatments to manage the symptoms of CF are advancing in the pipeline.

“This incredibly generous donation will make an important difference in the lives of those with CF,” said Campbell. “We could not be more grateful for Garry's lasting dedication and support of our mission and it is a privilege to honor him and Barry as we work together to put an end to this disease.”

Shandling began his work with the CF Foundation in the 1980s and championed the battle against CF until the end of his life, when he passed in March 2016.

We hope you too consider making a legacy gift. It's easy to do, and the CF Foundation is very helpful in the process. Should you wish to learn how to make a legacy gift, please visit www.cff.org/legacygiving
