Pseudomonas aeruginosa are strains of bacteria that are widely found in the environment. Pseudomonas is a major cause of lung infections in people with cystic fibrosis. The bacteria thrive in moist environments and equipment, such as humidifiers and catheters in hospital wards, and in kitchens, bathrooms, pools, hot tubs and sinks.
Some genetic diseases, such as cystic fibrosis, are caused by mutations in a single gene. A gene contains DNA “letters” that spell out the instructions to make a specific protein. When the protein isn't made correctly, it can lead to a cascade of problems.
Whether focused on physical wellness or connectivity and creativity, there are countless projects led by the community to support and empower people with CF and their loved ones.
Every May, the cystic fibrosis community comes together for CF Awareness Month. The theme of this year’s CF Awareness Month is, “Unity in Community.” The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has shareable resources to help you tell your story on social media this month and any time of year — no matter what your connection to CF is.
We offer awards for cystic fibrosis research and for professional development and training. Below is a list of current and upcoming funding opportunities.
As people with cystic fibrosis live longer, there is a growing demand for physicians who are trained to address the unique medical needs of adults with CF and a need for greater participation from adult care programs in the clinical research enterprise.
Alongside the cystic fibrosis community, we advocate for policies and programs that promote access to highly specialized CF care and that help advance research and drug development.
