Pseudomonas aeruginosa are strains of bacteria that are widely found in the environment. Pseudomonas is a major cause of lung infections in people with cystic fibrosis. The bacteria thrive in moist environments and equipment, such as humidifiers and catheters in hospital wards, and in kitchens, bathrooms, pools, hot tubs and sinks.

Some genetic diseases, such as cystic fibrosis, are caused by mutations in a single gene. A gene contains DNA “letters” that spell out the instructions to make a specific protein. When the protein isn't made correctly, it can lead to a cascade of problems.

As people with cystic fibrosis live longer, there is a growing demand for physicians who are trained to address the unique medical needs of adults with CF and a need for greater participation from adult care programs in the clinical research enterprise.
Alongside the cystic fibrosis community, we advocate for policies and programs that promote access to highly specialized CF care and that help advance research and drug development.

These evidence-based guidelines were created by a multidisciplinary committee to help cystic fibrosis specialists and primary care providers who care for people with CFTR-related metabolic disorder and their families. It should supplement the standard care provided in primary care.
Working alongside the CF community, the Foundation has fostered the development of more than a dozen CF treatments — an unprecedented number in a short span of time — and helped add decades of life for people with CF. And while therapies such as Trikafta® have had an incredible impact on the lives of those with CF, there are still many people with this disease who do not benefit from existing treatments. Our goal is to cure cystic fibrosis.
