The Carolyn and C. Richard Mattingly Leadership in Mental Health Care Award highlights the significance of mental health to the overall well-being of those living with cystic fibrosis and on the important work of researchers and care teams who address mental health as an integral part of specialized CF care.

The 2019 award recipient is Janice Abbott, PhD, PGCert, CPsychol. Dr. Abbott has performed clinical research in cystic fibrosis and other chronic conditions for more than 30 years. Notably, she was a lead researcher of the International Depression/Anxiety Epidemiological Study (TIDES) and a member of the International Committee on Mental Health that produced the International Mental Health Guidelines for CF. She leads the implementation of those guidelines at the European Cystic Fibrosis Society (ECFS). In addition to serving as the ECFS representative on the CF Foundation Mental Health Advisory Committee, Dr. Abbott has served as an associate editor for the Journal of Cystic Fibrosis for 15 years.

The award, created in 2016, is given by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to a member of the CF community who displays leadership and a commitment to the mental health and well-being of individuals with CF. The award is named in honor of Richard (Rich) Mattingly, former chief operating officer of the CF Foundation, and his wife, Carolyn. During his tenure, Mattingly helped the Foundation gain a better understanding of how difficult the disease is, emotionally and physically. Carolyn partnered with her husband for decades in the fight against CF. Following her death in September 2014, Carolyn's family and friends established a nonprofit foundation devoted to promoting mental health awareness.
