As my daughter became a teenager, it was difficult for me at first to let her manage the responsibilities of her cystic fibrosis care on her own. It took going to see a therapist for me to wrap my head around the fact that it wasn’t my place to nag her about doing her treatments anymore.

Abby Alten Schwartz is the mother of a young adult daughter with cystic fibrosis and cousin of two of the founders of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. A Philadelphia-based writer and communications consultant to hospitals, Abby also writes essays and reported stories on a range of topics, including CF. She’s been published in The Washington Post, The New York Times, Wired and several literary publications and is working on a memoir.
