My daughter, Lauren, didn’t know that having a lung transplant would greatly increase her risk for cancer until it was too late. Her death has taught me how important it is to know the health risks faced after transplant and our need to advocate for ourselves.

Gerry Sweeney recently retired after 42 years as a litigation attorney. He was on the national board of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation decades ago and chaired several Chicago area CF fundraisers, including tennis tournaments at which Billie Jean King appeared in support of a cure. He is currently on the board of the Undiagnosed Disease Network Foundation, a nonprofit organization which aims to foster partnerships among patients, clinicians, and scientist, to enhance the quality of life of undiagnosed and people with ultra-rare diseases and families.
