The Congressional Cystic Fibrosis Caucus includes members of the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives from both parties. It works to improve the quality of life for the nearly 40,000 Americans living with CF. The caucus includes 90 members who work to:
- Support CF research funding through the National Institutes of Health (NIH), U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and other federal research agencies
- Encourage collaboration between the public sector and private research organizations, including the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the biopharmaceutical industry
- Advance policies that support access to the highly specialized care and treatments needed to live with the disease
Frank Deford, former chairman emeritus of the CF Foundation, joined Dr. Francis S. Collins, former director of the NIH, to launch the Congressional Cystic Fibrosis Caucus in 2006. The caucus was led in the U.S. House of Representatives by then-Reps. Edward Markey of Massachusetts and Cliff Stearns of Florida. In 2016, now-Sen. Markey, along with Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, expanded the caucus to the U.S. Senate. Today, the caucus is chaired by Sens. Grassley and Markey, along with Rep. Jim McGovern of Massachusetts. The CF Foundation partners with the caucus, providing members with updates on the CF community, tours of CF care centers, and opportunities to meet with members and their staffs to discuss legislation that may impact people living with CF.
