Travel Award Supplement

This program is intended to support PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, clinical fellows, and junior faculty participating in off-site training opportunities to learn new research skills and techniques to advance their research experience or to perform studies that cannot be performed at their host institution but are necessary to advance their research project.

Applicant Eligibility

To be eligible, applicants must:

Be an active research scientist working on a cystic fibrosis-related project. This may include a thesis or dissertation project, a funded fellowship, or a research grant.
Have at least one year of research experience at the PhD student level or higher.

Note: Applications for participation in or attendance at scientific research conferences are not eligible under this award mechanism.

Training Expectations

During the training period at the host laboratory or training course, trainees are expected to:

Gain hands-on experience with the assay, technique, or model
Learn to collect, analyze, and interpret data using the approach

For transferable techniques, trainees are expected to become sufficiently trained to:

Implement the method independently at their home institution
Troubleshoot issues with minimal reliance on the host laboratory

Evaluation Criteria

Applications will be assessed on the following:

Feasibility and depth of the proposed training activities
Novelty of the assay or technique
Justification for off-site training (i.e., that the skills cannot be fully acquired through literature, online instruction, or remote consultation)
Suitability of the host laboratory for the proposed work
Value of the exchange, including opportunities for expertise or technology transfer, ongoing collaboration, future co-authored publications

Award Amount

The program provides up to $3,000 to be used exclusively for travel expenses. Funds are paid directly to the awardee’s employing institution.
