Independent Research Funding Opportunities

Success With Therapies Research Consortium Award

Purpose: To provide the opportunity for clinically trained physicians to identify and study interventions to enhance successful self-management and related health outcomes among individuals with CF.

Funding: Up to $21,000 in direct costs plus 12% of indirect costs ($23,520 total costs) per year

Duration: Up to three years

Clinical Research Award+ Concept Proposal and Planning Grant: Therapy Initiation and Modification on ETI (TIME)

Purpose: To provide resources and planning support for proposed multi-center clinical trials that address a TIME area of interest and have the potential to result in meaningful changes to the current treatment paradigm.

Funding: Up to $125,000 per year, plus an additional 12% indirect costs

Duration: One year

Deadline: January 2024

Patient Registry Research: Application of Advanced Methods

Purpose: To use innovative registry-based analyses that aim to test novel methods to advance the use of the Foundation's Patient Registry.

Funding: Up to $150,000 per year for up to two years, plus an additional 12% indirect costs.

Duration: Two years

Deadlines: Letter of Intent: August 9, 2023; full application: November 14, 2023

Health Equity Team Science Award

Purpose: To provide support for multi-investigator research projects that have the potential to make an important contribution to health equity in the CF population.

Funding: Up to $200,000 per year for up to four years, plus an additional 12% indirect costs per year. The lead institution may request up to $50,000 in additional direct costs per year to support an administrative core. 

Duration: Four years

Deadlines: LOI April 2024, full application September 2024

Multiple Principal Investigator Clinical Award

Purpose: To provide support for multi-investigator-initiated clinical research projects that have the potential to make an important contribution to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s mission.

Funding: Each applicant may request up to $200,000 per year for up to three years + an additional 12% indirect costs per year; lead institution may request up to $25,000 in additional direct costs per year

Duration: 3 years

Biological Basis for Cystic Fibrosis-Related Diabetes Program

Purpose: To solicit and fund projects that will improve our understanding of the biological basis for the development and progression of cystic fibrosis-related diabetes as well as to identify potential novel therapeutic strategies to manage and treat the disease.

Funding: Up to $150,000 per year + up to 12% indirect costs

Duration: 3 years

Gastrointestinal Manifestations of CF: Basic Science Projects

Purpose: To solicit and fund projects that will improve our understanding of the biological basis for the development and progression of gastrointestinal manifestations in cystic fibrosis as well as to identify potential novel therapeutic strategies to manage and treat them

Funding: Up to $150,000 per year + up to 12% indirect costs

Duration: 3 years

Path to a Cure Collaborative Research Grant

Purpose: To facilitate research that will contribute to the development of new therapies or therapeutic strategies to treat cystic fibrosis with an emphasis on advancing CFTR gene repair and replacement approaches.

Funding: May not exceed $1 million/year + 12% indirect costs

Duration: 3 years

Pilot and Feasibility Award

Purpose: To support (non-Path to a Cure related) basic science research studies focused on developing and testing new hypotheses in areas relevant to cystic fibrosis.

Funding: $50,000/year + 12% indirect costs

Path to a Cure Pilot and Feasibility Award

Purpose: To support basic science research studies focused on developing and testing new hypotheses in areas relevant to the Path to a Cure Initiative (see guidelines for areas of interest).

Path to a Cure Pioneer Award

Purpose: To support paradigm-shifting technologies that have the potential to cure CF at the cellular and/or genetic level

Funding: As agreed upon + 12% indirect costs

Clinical Pilot and Feasibility Award

Purpose: To enable investigators to collect sufficient preliminary data to determine the best strategies and methods for approaching a major question that ultimately will require assessment through a larger scale research and/or multi-center, collaborative clinical trial.

Funding: $80,000-$150,000/year + 12% indirect costs

Duration: 2 years

Research Grants

Purpose: To support (non-Path to a Cure related) basic science research that will provide new insights that contribute to the understanding of the basic etiology and pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis.

Funding: $150,000/year + 12% indirect costs

Path to a Cure Research Grants

Purpose: To support basic science research that may enable the development of new therapies that directly impact CFTR function (see guidelines for areas of interest).

Clinical Research Award

Purpose: To provide support for investigator-initiated clinical research projects that have the potential to make an important contribution to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's mission. Research projects may address diagnosis, treatment, management of disease or symptom, or the pathophysiology of cystic fibrosis, using clinical, (observational/interventional), translational, or epidemiologic study approaches.

Funding: $150,000 - $350,000 + 12% indirect costs

Duration: 3 years

CFF/NIH R01 Unfunded Award

Purpose: To provide bridge funding for CF-relevant R01/R21 (or equivalent) applications that were submitted to NIH (or other governmental agencies) that scored in the 40th percentile but were not awarded by the funding agency.

Funding: $125,000/year (indirect costs not allowed)

Duration: Up to 2 years or until NIH funding is secured

Training, Career Development, and Mentored Research Funding Opportunities

Medical Resident Research Award

Purpose: To introduce residents to research through participation in a CF-relevant research project with the goal to develop and maintain interest in a career in CF research or as a CF care provider.

Funding: $10,000 for one year

Duration: 1 year

Deadline: November 15, 2023

Student Traineeship Award

Purpose: To introduce students to cystic fibrosis research and encourage them to remain engaged in the field.

Funding: $4,000 (indirect costs not allowed)

Duration: 10-weeks to 1 year

Travel Award Supplement

Purpose: To support PhD students, postdocs, and junior faculty to participate in off-site training to learn new research skills and techniques to advance their research.

Student Loan Repayment Program
(Only for awardees with active Clinical Fellowships, LeRoy Matthews Awards, Harry Shwachman Awards, DIGEST awards, and EnVision awards)

Purpose: To offer eligible awardees assistance with student loan payments for educational loans acquired in the pursuit of a graduate-level degree.

Funding: Up to $14,000 + 25% offset

Duration: One-time payment/eligible year

Postdoctoral Fellows (Ph.D., D.V.M., Pharm.D., or equivalent terminal degree)

Clinical Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Award

Purpose: To enable training in new research areas and methods to advance the scientific knowledge of the applicant and to collect data to enable their transition into an impactful research career.

Funding: Up to $75,000 in the first year and up to $76,000 in the second year (indirect costs not allowed)

Duration: 2 years

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Award

Purpose: To support (non-Path to a Cure related) postdoctoral research training related to cystic fibrosis.

Funding: Up to $75,000 in the first year and $76,000 in the second year (indirect costs not allowed)

Path to a Cure Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Award

Purpose: To support postdoctoral research training in topics related to the CFF Path to a Cure Initiative (see guidelines for areas of interest).

Funding: Up to $75,000 first year and $76,000 second year (indirect costs not allowed) 

Duration: 2 years

Postdoc-to-Faculty Transition Awards

Purpose: To support postdoctoral research fellows pursuing non-Path to a Cure related research during their fellowship and aid in their transition to an independent research faculty position.

Funding: Up to $150,000 per year during the training phase of the award. The faculty phase includes $80,000 for salary support and $30,000 for research support. (indirect costs not allowed)

Duration: 3 – 5 years

Clinical Fellows (M.D., D.O., or equivalent clinical degree)

Clinical Fellowship Awards -- Education and Training

Purpose: To encourage specialized training in the early career development stage, provide exposure to CF research and patient care, and prepare well-qualified candidates for careers related to CF

Funding: $65,000 for salary and benefits and $2,000 to attend NACFC per year (indirect costs not allowed)

Duration: 1-2 years

Clinical Fellowship Awards -- Research

Purpose: For physicians who are engaged in fellowship training in a subspecialty related to CF care and seek support for fellowship training and a well-defined, CF-relevant research project.

Funding: $101,000 in direct costs per year (indirect costs not allowed)

Duration: 1-2 years

LeRoy Matthews Physician-Scientist Award

Purpose: To encourage outstanding newly trained internists and pediatricians to enhance clinical proficiency in CF-related subspecialties and to develop the necessary research capabilities to become independent biomedical investigators.

Funding: Ranges from $65,000 stipend plus $11,000 research and development for first year to $100,000 stipend plus $31,000 research and development for sixth year (indirect costs not allowed)

Duration: 3-6 years

Junior Faculty Independent Investigator

Research Additional Mentoring Program (RAMP) Award

Purpose: To enable promising early-career physician scientists seeking additional research mentoring outside of their home academic institutions to enhance their clinical or translational research proficiency and support their development of the necessary clinical research capabilities to become independent investigators.

Funding: Up to $42,420 per year

Duration: 3 years

Harry Shwachman Clinical Investigator Award

Purpose: To provide the opportunity for promising, clinically trained physicians with a commitment to research to develop into independent biomedical researchers who have active involvement in CF-related areas.

Funding: $100,000 salary support per year plus $31,000 for supplies (indirect costs not allowed)

Duration: 3 years

Deadline: February

CFF/NIH K-Unfunded Award

Purpose: To support excellent CF-focused researchers whose projects have been submitted to and approved by the NIH but cannot be supported by available funds.

Funding: $80,000 per year (indirect costs not allowed)

Duration: Up to 2 years or until NIH funding is secured

Deadline: January 1 to November 3

CFF/NIH K-Boost Award

Purpose: To provide supplemental funding to qualified and promising scientists early in their faculty careers who have obtained K funding from the National Institutes of Health in areas that reflect the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's research priorities.

Funding: $50,000 (indirect costs not allowed)

Duration: Up to 5 years/duration of the NIH K-award

Clinical Research Scholars Program Award (CRSP w/LOI)

Purpose: To enable outstanding early career pediatricians and internists to enhance their clinical research proficiency and to develop the necessary clinical research capabilities to become independent investigators who formulate and lead multi-center, clinical research studies.

Funding: Up to $40,740 per year (plus travel) 

Duration: 3 years

Cystic Fibrosis Statistical Expertise and Network (CF StatNet) Award (w/LOI)

Purpose: To promote greater collaborative integration of statisticians and cystic fibrosis clinical investigators.

Funding: Level of effort-based funding – refer to RFA for more details

Care Enhancement and Care Team Development Funding Opportunities

Clinical Trials in Organ Transplantation Ancillary Studies (w/LOI)

Purpose: For research projects that aim to use available clinical trials in organ transplantation specimens and/or clinical data to improve knowledge of chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD) pathogenesis and explore new approaches to detection, prevention, monitoring, or treatment of CLAD.

Funding: Between $50,000 to $100,000 per year for up to two years plus 12% indirect costs

Duration: 2 years

LEAPP CF: Leadership and Education Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship Program

Purpose: To expand the number of CF providers in outpatient pediatric and adult care programs

Funding: Up to $74,110 in Year 1; up to $77,200 in Year 2, plus 12% indirect costs

Duration: 2 years

Deadline: March 7, 2023

Program for Adult Care Excellence (PACE) Award

Purpose: To meet the growing demand for physicians trained to address the unique medical needs of adult patients with CF

Developing Innovative Gastroenterology Specialty Training (DIGEST) Program

Purpose: To expand the availability of CF-GI experts trained to address the unique gastroenterologic needs of CF patients and the need for a greater GI focus in the clinical research enterprise

EnVision CF: Emerging Leaders in CF Endocrinology III Program

Purpose: To fund the training of physicians interested in developing expertise in the endocrinologic care of patients with CF

Implementation of Outpatient Clinical Pharmacy Services: Award for a Pharmacy Technician

Purpose: To facilitate development and implementation of outpatient clinical pharmacy services at accredited CF care centers

Implementation of Outpatient Physical Therapy Services

Purpose: To facilitate development and implementation of outpatient physical therapy services at accredited CF care centers

Screening Improvement Program (SIP) for Optimizing Diagnosis of Infants

Purpose: Quality improvement (QI) awards for projects designed to improve the early diagnosis of CF through the newborn screening system and/or to improve the initial management of infants with positive screening tests and the follow-up communications with their families.

Funding: $75,000 per year for 2 years (plus 12% indirect costs)

Tools for Remote CF Care Delivery: Application of QI Science

Purpose: Awards for innovative, multi-site quality improvement (QI) projects that aim to test tools and processes facilitating remote CF care delivery.
